Having no prior experience, I felt that the best way to learn the engine and editors would be to re-imagine (de-imagine?) one of my favourite free-for-all maps from the Unreal series, Deck16. The only restrictions that I placed on myself while learning was that I would limit myself to the same engine abilities that authors 10 years ago would have had. I'd guess that this map would likely work on vanilla doom.exe, but I'm not 100% on that. Doesn't seem to be causing any issues, though - no HOM or Other Bad Things.
