The level is a huge castle with many secret rooms and passages. Deathmatch is not supported because of the size of the level. The story is that you defeated the monsters in the US and now your commanders have sent you to England to help them rid their country of the infestation. While you are on a scouting mission you get cut off from your unit and a trerrible storm is coming. The only refuge from the storm is and old castle you can see off in the distance. When you finally get to the castle it is almost dark. The files are: lair.zip-the wad file lairgfx.zip-the file for the music and suits of armor, tables ect. This file is not needed but makes the level neater. If you play without this some wall textures will not look right and there will be alot of red pillars in the level.
LAIR2.WAD - a HUGE single-player level for Doom II This is an updated and LEGALIZED version of LAIR.ZIP. The original version contained about 3.5MB of illegal sprite graphics from doom2.wad (copyrighted by id Software). This version only has the 12 modified sprites (ironically, some of which have been extracted from Wolfenstein 3D, also by id Software). Original author : Mike Cobb <email removed> Version 2 Update : Sparky of KISS Software <email removed> New to this version: - removed the illegal sprite graphics - combined the two wad files into a single wad - fixed the offsets of some of the sprites - the original version was over 4.5MB unzipped, and this version is less than 1MB ! - this version contains only 2 files: lair2.wad and lair2.txt Note, no attempt at all has been made to fix the map errors (texture alignment, etc.). However, in an attempt to speed up the gameplay on slower systems (or slower ports like Vavoom), the map was rebuilt using RMB (-perfect) and BSP. If it still runs too slowly for you, try a lower skill setting (skill 4 has twice as many monsters as skill 2). To use LAIR2.WAD with 'Plain Vanilla' Doom2 you'll first need to add the missing sprites from doom2.wad using a program such as DeuSF, WinTex, NWT, etc. For example: deusf -as lair2.wad A better method is to use a Doom Source Port which can import pwads containing sprite data, such as: Boom, PRboom, MBF, SMMU, ZDoom, PrjDoom, Vavoom, Legacy, etc. Patching is not necessary with these ports, just use LAIR2.WAD as-is. For example: boom -file lair2.wad The original text file follows: Ŀ MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION Title : The lair Filename : lair.zip Author : Mike Cobb Email Address : <email removed> Misc. Author Info : This is a level I worked on over a year ago and I just got around to finishing it to a point where I will upload it. It is also the first wad I have ever uploaded but I have made several other levels for doom, doom2, heretic, and hexen. Description : The level is a huge castle with many secret rooms and passages. Also some of the textures are not aligned properly The level runs a little slow on a 486/66 on skill level 4 because of the amount of monsters, running it on a 486/100 or pentium would fix this problem. Ŀ COPYRIGHTS / PERMISSIONS Authors may use this level as a base to build additional levels. If you do use it I would like to know so I can download the level you make and try it. Also if someone could convert it to hexen it would be great. I have tried but haven't had much success. The converter gave me alot of problem areas. you may distribute this level provided you include this file and the lair.wad file with no modifications Disclamer The author of this wad is not responsible for any damage caused by the use of this wad! If your computer malfunctions, you are on your own. To put it another way, use this wad at your own risk. Ŀ WHERE TO GET THIS WAD ftp.cdrom.com Ŀ IMPORTANT NOTES I do not recomend playing this level without at least a 486/66. The level is also very hard and the monsters are as follows skill 1,2 200 skill 3 300 skill 4 400 Even with this many monsters they are fairly spread out in the level because of the levels size.
