The Big Open
Thought I'd stretch the DOOM engine a bit. This level is wide open, with six main areas. Its the biggest PWAD I've made or ever seen. That is, big in area, not sectors and such. It did hang the game for unknown reasons, so maybe there is a size limit. Its too big for a good deathmatch unfortunatly, though the starts are there. I like the sense of moving to a distinct -new- area. DOOM has little continuity...one area, hit a switch, poof, new area. I would prefer a future with a wide open map...quake? You only get a sense of that here.
The best thing about these levels is they're fairly straight-forward. That is there's no find the key, spend 20 minutes looking for where to use it, 20 seconds of death-dealing, find a secret switch and so on. That's not to say that this kind of level doesn't have its place, it does, but i don't design that. I've had enough of that from DOOM II. These levels (i think) are original. I haven't really played anything like them. Anyway, please see what you think, and let me know. NOTE: The above email address is mine only until the end of '95. ------- P L O T -------
The Maze -- Revision X
This is a revision of my earlier Doom 2 level. It originally was a fairly good deathmatch level, consisting of a central courtyard area connected to a bunch of large hallways. Well, I ironed out a few irritating kinks (Like the fact that a player could defend the area with the rocket launcher much too easily, as there was only a single way to get there.) and added some new areas, an additional teleporter and another door (before there were only two), so that the door sound doesn't give you away as much. Also, I realised that with no monsters, I could use the difficulty levels to create variations in the level. See the notes below.
the cage of destiny v1.0
Well, check it out yourself. As you'll notice, there is a cage in this level. That means you can capture your opponent when he is trying to get the plasma riffle by pressing one of 4 buttons on the opposite side. There is still a way out when being captured, but you can be targeted easily..... If you want to hunt down your opponent, well, do it. Escaping meat on the outer way is inticated by an arrow. (you can't escape your destiny!) On skill level 1+2, there is a chainsaw in the middle of the level. On every other skill setting, this chainsaw is replaced by a rocket launcher (some don't like rocket launchers in deathmatch levels, don't know why..), but the chainsaw is placed on an other location. NO BFG 9000 in this level!
