I though I was going to do more with it that would have necessitated a change to an instrument that didn't have a fifth harmony built into it, but I didn't, so back it goes. - I fat-fingered a filename and a duplicate song with the name of E_E3M7 made it into the previous version. - I re-did D_INTRO (Doom 1 Title Screen), this time using a version converted using QMUS2MID instead of MUS2MIDI. The latter seems to produce MIDIs with lots of redundant events, often right at the beginning of the song. I think this was causing notes to play off tempo at the start of a song when using my Roland SC-88 Pro, possibly due to bandwith limitations of real MIDI devices. Softsynths did not appear to be affected. - FL Studio has one of the best piano roll editors I've seen, but it isn't the best at preserving MIDI file integrity. It often screws up pitch bend sensitivity when loading MIDI files previously exported by it and will save global configuration events (tempo, time signature, etc.) outside of track 1. I have since discovered a nice, native MIDI editor from Japan called Sekaiju and that has eliminated some of the headaches associated with FL Studio. It also seems to have shaved an average of 8% from each MIDI file (which adds up when you have 67 of them). v1.1 ---- - Minutes after uploading 1.0, I discovered that I missed a rather conspicuous minor 3rd in D_E1M7 (and its duplicates). Oops. * Other Incredibly Pedantic Development Notes Nobody Asked For * - A few songs had to have their chord progressions adjusted since the original ones sounded a bit disjointed during the modification process. - The original E1M4 music mostly uses the whole-tone scale, which presented an extra challenge when adapting it to major key. Hopefully, I pulled it off. - Many of the original songs build upon themselves by gradually introducing extra layers of instruments playing the same melodies, often by directly transposing them up or down (E1M9 and E2M4 come to mind). To stay true to the objective of making happy-sounding music, this meant changing many of them to true harmonies (usually major thirds). - MAP32 (D_ULTIMA) was already in major, but there was still room to make it happier by changing the chord progressions, moving the flat notes up/down, and changing the flute from a chromatic to a major arpeggio. - In addition to transposing notes, many pitch bends had to be changed from half-step to whole-step or vice versa where appropriate. * Copyright / Permissions * Authors MAY use the contents of this file as a base for modification or reuse.
