A quick example I made that shows how to make a self-referencing sector that hosts the monster that is able to hear, see and attack the player.
Note: the example wad is single-player only.

The requisites for this technique is:
1. A compatible nodebuilder. BSP-W32 will work. Some others may not (monster will fail to acknowledge player existence).
2. A sector outside a map to which the self-referencing sector is joined. This ensures the monster can see the player or will retaliate when attacked, but he will not be able to hear a player that shoots out there when he is not hitting the monster. In fact, I am convinced that sometimes monster won't be able to see/retaliate as well with this step alone.
3. (control sector layout) A sector adjacent to the sector to which the self-referencing sector is joined is itself joined with some sector that is near the self-referencing sector. This actually allows monster to hear the player (and will unbreak seeing and retaliation if those don't work from steps 1-2 alone), if the sound leaks to that sector the control sector is joined with.

Known nodebuilder were it will NOT work:
zokumbsp. The mancubus in example map will hear the player if he shoots, but won't attack him unless player gets near (inside the sector that is linked to the control one?)
