You have some options for better speed by using lower resolutions and 8 bit color. The best setting for quality and speed is 640x480 16bit color. Here's a list of system speeds and what I've had the best look/performance with: 486DX 16 megs: 320x200 8 bit color -noextra P133 32 megs: 320x200 8 bit color P200 64 megs: 640x480 16 bit color P2 233 64 megs: 800x600 16 bit color P3 600 128 megs: 1024x768 16 bit color You can also turn off the rain and ambient sounds by running qdoom -noextra. The rain can take quite a toll on a slower system (slower than a P200 32 megs). Anything faster than a P200 and at least 32 megs should run just fine. My P3 600 128 megs runs a little slow at 1280x1024 16 bit color. Try different options and see what runs best on your system. If the menu option for these resolutions are not available, you can pass them from DOS using this: qdoom -width xxx -height xxx qdoom -width 800 -height 600 If your system cannot initialize that resolution, the engine will return to the previous resolution and let you know it couldn't initialize it. ------------------------- CONSTRUCTION : ------------------------- BASE : From scratch BUILD TIME : started 2/23/1999, ended 4/25/2001 EDITORS USED : Paint Shop Pro -textures, sprites, graphics Animation Shop -animated/swirly liquid textures Paint Brush -minor cleanup and croping Winpak 1.3 -extract Quake resource Adqedit 1.3 -extract and edit Quake sprites and graphics QuArK 5.3 -extract textures qME 3.1 -pose and take screenshots of models to create sprites DeuTex 3.6 -build QDOOMTST.WAD from scratch Wintex 4.3 -edit QDOOMTST.WAD and it's resources DOOMCad 5.1 -main map editor WAD Studio 1.5b -used for error checking and making small lines WAD Author -backup map editor (used or detail) GLBSP -special EDGE map compiler (based off BSP 2.3) for GL nodes RMB -reject map builder WAD Cleaner 1.0 -cleans and compacts QDOOM.WAD CMAPTOOL -BOOM's colormap tool Digital Orchestrator Pro 3.00.37 -music editor Cool Edit 96 -sound editor L3ENC 2.6 -WAV to MP3 encoder Notepad -used to create/edit DDF and RTS EDIT -used for ASCII art for ENDOOM screens KNOWN BUGS : none that are significant RESOURCES : Quake (obviously) HeXen2: (some modified sounds and sprites) QEX2A0 - QEX2F0 (small explosion) DSPUMPS1 and DSPUMPOV (the metallic clank only) DSRUBBL1 - DSRUBBL3 (stone and metal shattering) GothicDM.wad: two very modified transparent window bar textures (used in map01) Skypack1.wad: created by Stian Skjondal (zsignal) QSKY_01 - QSKY_04 (various mountain skies) DarcJedi's custom skies: www.telefragged.com/soup QSKY_C1 - QSKY_C4 (cloudy mountain sky) QSKY_C1 - QSKT_C4 (cloudy moon sky) =========================================================================== --------------------------- COPYRIGHT AND PERMISSIONS : --------------------------- Authors MAY use this package as a base to build additional levels.
